TV tower breaks apart

A TELEVISION tower in northern China broke apart after a rainstorm hit the area last Thursday.

The landmark tower of Jinzhou City in Hebei Province was under construction when it broke into three parts.

The 186.8-meter-tall tower had its steel structure fractured at 56 meters and 70 meters, Yanzhao Evening News reported yesterday.

The lower part still stands at the site with its steel framework twisted, the report said. The top of the tower fell into nearby bushes while the middle section was leaning against the base.

A worker surnamed Zhang from a factory 500 meters away witnessed the collapse at about 7pm.

Zhang told the newspaper that the tower swung initially, then leaned over, snapped and collapsed.

"It was louder than a strong wind," Zhang said.

Jinzhou's radio and television authority said the television tower hadn't been put into service.

With a total investment of more than 3.2 million yuan (US$468,000), construction of the tower had numerous delays. It was scheduled to be completed in February.
