TV warranties extended

THREE overseas TV makers have promised to extend screen warranties to three years following a CCTV report that claimed many overseas firms' warranty policies were below the industry standard.

The three companies are Japan-based Sony and South Korea-based LG and Samsung.

"To obey the Chinese related law and regulations, Sony decided to extend warranties of LCD TV screens to three years," Sony said on its Chinese Website.

Samsung and LG also promised to extend their warranties on TV screens to three years, according to media reports yesterday which quoted company officials.

Last Monday, CCTV reported that overseas TV makers didn't provide three-year warranties on TV screens for Chinese consumers, which often left them with hefty repair bills after the guarantee period ran out.

On Friday, 20 regional consumer rights associations, including those from Shanghai and Nanjing, sent a statement to the national regulator, suggesting that flat panel TV screens be guaranteed for three years to meet the industry standard.

At present, all Chinese brands of TV come with a three-year screen warranty.
