Tainted milk was sold, some charge
ALTHOUGH dairy giant Mengniu has claimed that a batch of carcinogen-tainted milk never entered the market, some consumers complained yesterday that they purchased suspect products with the same manufacture date and serial number.
A resident uploaded pictures of Mengniu milk products he bought on Sichuan Province-based online forum Mala.cn, demanding the company apologize for allowing the tainted batch to enter the market.
The resident, who used only the nickname "Poor man," showed the products' date of manufacture and batch number as proof that they came from the same batch as the tainted milk. In the photos, the date and batch number shows the products were manufactured on October 18 in Meishan in the southwestern province.
Over the weekend, a batch of milk produced the same day and in the same city was found to contain excessive levels of flavacin M1 - which is tied to liver cancer, the country's top quality watchdog said.
The milk contained flavacin levels of 1.2 micrograms per kilogram - 140 times the country's permitted level, according to a test by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine. The quality watchdog said the eating of mildewed feed by cows caused excessive levels of the cancer-causing toxin in the milk products.
Following the incident, the Inner Mongolia-based Mengniu Dairy Group apologized to consumers but said the products had been destroyed and never reached the market.
"So this is the tainted milk products that the company boasted never entered the markets," said the poster on the website. "My child has already drunk many boxes of it and I demand Mengniu apologize to all its consumers across the country."
On the microblog Weibo.com, a netizen in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province, also uploaded pictures showing that she had purchased milk products with the same manufacture date and serial number.
In response, Lu Jianjun, an official with the company, told Nanfang Daily yesterday that although the milk discussed by customers had the same manufacture date and serial number as the tainted product, it doesn't mean it was produced in the same batch.
"Even the milk products produced in one day in the same factory, they may come from different batches," Lu said. "The milk products selling in the market are all qualified products meeting national standards."
He said that customers who are worried about the products may get them tested on their own.
According to the Southern Metropolis Daily, many parents in Meishan are worried about their children's health as tens of thousands of students drink Mengniu milk every day at school. Meishan Education Bureau officials told the newspaper that the batch of milk to supply students was not produced in factories in the city.
The dairy giant has been involved in several scandals in recent years, including the country's worst food-safety incident in recent times. In 2008, Mengniu infant formula and other brands were found tainted with industrial chemical melamine. The problem milk left six children dead and sickened about 300,000.
