Tainted rice still on sale
CADMIUM-LACED rice is still on sale in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong Province, despite earlier media reports that large quantities of tainted rice had been sold in the city since 2009.
The Guangzhou Food and Drug Administration tested 18 rice products in the first three months and found eight contained excessive levels of cadmium, which increases the risk of someone getting cancer, it announced on Thursday.
However, the authority refused to name the products or companies responsible, Southern Metropolis Daily reported yesterday.
In late February, government-owned Shenzhen Cereals Group was exposed to have bought tainted rice in 2009 from state-run and regional grain reserves in Hunan Province, a major rice producing region in central China.
Quality inspectors ruled as early as 2009 that the rice could only be used for industrial purposes such as making industrial alcohols.
