Tainted yogurt halts dairy factory

AUTHORITIES in Xiangtan in central Hunan Province have suspended the production of a local diary company after its corn-flavored yogurt was found to contain melamine.

Authorities said they recalled 5,181 of the total 12,360 bottles of tainted yogurt produced by Xiangtan Yuanshan Diary Co on June 15 this year. That batch of yogurt has been distributed to markets in Changsha, Chenzhou, Shaoyang and Xiangtan cities in the province as well as cities in neighboring Jiangxi and Hubei provinces, Xinhua reported today.

Search for the rest of the tainted yogurt is continuing, said the Hunan Food Safety Commission at a press conference today.

The company was supposed to destroy 27 kilograms of melamine-tainted milk powder from its milk supplier, Qinghan Dongyuan Diary Co, before June. But six kilograms of the laced powder was used to make yogurt and the rest was confiscated by authorities on November 7.

Test showed the melamine level in the yogurt is 4.8 milligram per kilo, nearly doubled what is permitted.
