Taipei court to summon Chen Shui-bian's mother-in-law in corruption trial
A district court in Taipei decided yesterday to summon Wu Wang-hsia, former Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian's mother-in-law, for further investigation of the corruption cases of Chen and his wife.
The court said the intent was to determine what Wu Shu-zhen, Chen's wife, had done after using her mother's bank account.
Chen's case will enter the formal trial phase on March 26.
Also yesterday, Huang Fang-yen, Chen's family doctor and close friend, was put on the island's most-wanted list.
Huang flew to the United States in November after the corruption case became public, and he has not returned despite several summonses from the prosecution.
Chen and his wife are accused of taking bribes worth 100 million New Taiwan dollars (US$29 million) and US$6 million in a corporate land purchase. They were also allegedly involved in embezzling more than 104 million New Taiwan dollars of special funds. Chen and his co-defendants are also accused of laundering illegal income.
