Taipei suspends city exchanges with Philippines
TAIPEI mayor Hau Lung-bin announced yesterday the suspension of inter-city exchanges with the Philippines, after a Taiwanese fisherman was shot dead at sea by the Philippine coast guard.
The Philippines will also not be allowed to take part in Dragon Boat Festival races in Taipei on June 12, Hau said.
Hau condemned the shooting as a violent act upon an unarmed fisherman. He urged the Philippine government to apologize, release reports and hold those responsible to account.
He also advised Taiwanese authorities to halt Philippine-bound tourism, suspend labor from there and increase fishing protection patrols.
