Taiwan beefs ups security
Taiwan stepped up security measures yesterday after a driver rammed a truck through a bullet-proof screen and into the main gate of the office of the island leader, apparently intentionally, officials said.
A man identified only by his family name Chang drove the 35-ton truck through railings, the screen and up a set of steps before becoming stuck in the gate leading to the office’s main building, police said.
Ma Ying-jeou is currently on a trip to Africa.
His spokeswoman said security measures had been beefed up at the Taipei site following the early morning incident.
The impact knocked Chang unconscious and he received hospital treatment.
Police said Chang had refused to answer any questions, adding that they suspect he crashed “intentionally.”
