Taiwan chip giant ready for vigorous patent fight

Taiwan chipmaker giant Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, a key Apple supplier, vowed yesterday to 鈥渇ight vigorously鈥 against patent infringement claims filed by US rival GlobalFoundries.

GlobalFoundries said it had filed multiple lawsuits in the United States and Germany on Monday, alleging infringement of 16 of its patents.

The company said it was seeking 鈥渟ignificant damages鈥 from TSMC as well as injunctions to prevent the import of products made with the allegedly infringed technologies to both countries.

鈥淔or years, while we have been devoting billions of dollars to domestic research and development, TSMC has been unlawfully reaping the benefits of our investments,鈥 Gregg Bartlett, GlobalFoundries senior vice president of engineering and technology, said in a statement.

鈥淭his action is critical to halt (TSMC鈥檚) unlawful use of our vital assets and to safeguard the American and European manufacturing base.鈥

GlobalFoundries said it has invested more than US$15 billion in the past decade in the US and more than US$6 billion in Europe, bucking a trend of the shift to Asia in semiconductor manufacturing.

TSMC has rejected the allegations as 鈥渂aseless.鈥

And it has vowed to use 鈥渁ny and all options to protect our proprietary technologies.鈥

鈥淲e are disappointed to see a peer resort to meritless lawsuits instead of competing in the marketplace with technology,鈥 it said in a statement.

Founded by one of Taiwan鈥檚 most revered business leaders Morris Chang, TSMC is the world鈥檚 leading contract microchip maker, supplying Apple鈥檚 iPhones and other leading tech firms.

It said it has invested heavily and built up one of the largest semiconductor portfolios, with more than 37,000 patents worldwide. In 2017, it signed a deal to build a US$3 billion plant in Nanjing, Taiwan鈥檚 largest single investment in the Chinese mainland.
