Taiwan colleges to take students from mainland
Chinese mainland students are very likely to enroll in Taiwan universities next year for the first time, disclosed a deputy head of a top Taiwan university.
The recruitment will initially extend to master's degree and PhD candidates, Taiwan University's vice president, Tzong-Ho Bau, said yesterday.
The recruitment is anticipated next summer and the students would attend school starting in autumn of 2011, said Bau during the sixth Cross-Strait Economic, Trade and Culture Forum, which closed yesterday in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province.
According to Bau, the Taiwan government will probably pass an act for the education exchange this September while his university, one of Taiwan's best, sets up a recruiting office in Beijing to select the best candidates in the mainland.
The university will be open to mainland students and is likely to reward scholarships to the best among them, he added.
The amount will be based on tuition and government allocation. Bau gave no number, but said "it will be high."
The mainland announced it would recognize university diplomas issued in Taiwan during the first cross-strait forum in April 2006. Last July, during the fifth forum, it allowed Taiwan students with top-notch results in college entrance exams to apply to mainland universities.
