Taiwan drug dealer gets death for shooting police

A Taiwan drug dealer was sentenced to death after a first-instance trial because he shot a policeman dead and later removed his handcuffs using a trick while being escorted in a police van, Information Times reported today.

Lu Zhisheng was arrested by police in Huizhou, southern Guangdong Province on July 25 last year when he was trading drugs in a hotel. When the police ordered him to take out all the drugs from his car, he suddenly took out a gun from the trunk with his back-handcuffed hands. A policeman named Du Yuhua noticed his move and rushed to him, but the gun fired and the bullet went through Du's abdomen. Lu was soon subdued by other policemen, but Du died.

Lu defended in the trial that he didn't shoot the policeman on purpose as the gun went off by accident. But the Huizhou Intermediate People's Court rejected it because Lu used to serve in the army and was well trained with guns. Besides, the gun was examined by authority and no quality problem was detected.

Lu claimed to appeal immediately after the verdict was announced.
