Taiwan honors best in music
Taiwan pop star Jolin Tsai was the big winner at the island’s Golden Melody Awards for Asian music.
Nominated in seven categories, she won best Mandarin album for “Play,” best vocal recording album and best single producer.
Celebrities and musicians from the Chinese-speaking world attended Saturday night’s ceremony.
Screaming fans at the entrance to the Taipei Arena saw their favorite stars walk the red carpet, including Jay Chou, a best album nominee for “Aiyo, Not Bad,” and Eason Chan, who was named best Mandarin male singer.
A-Mei was named best Mandarin female singer for her album “Faces of Paranoia.”
Buddha Jump, an indie rock band headed by singer-songwriter Penny Tai, bagged two awards, best band and best arrangement.
Best new artist award went to Boxing, a band that mixes Taiwan music with rap beats.
