Taiwan jails 13 for death of conscript
A TAIWAN court yesterday sentenced 13 military officials to up to eight months in prison for the death of a young conscript last year that sparked widespread anger.
The Taoyuan district court also cleared five officials of any wrongdoing in the death of Corporal Hung Chung-chiu, citing insufficient evidence.
Hung, 24, died of heatstroke on July 4, just three days before the end of his compulsory year-long military service.
His family said Hung was forced to do excessive exercise as punishment for taking a smartphone onto his base.
Prosecutors said Hung was subjected to “cruel and abusive” exercises when indicting the 18 military officials.
Hung’s family protested at what they perceived was light punishment, as the accused were not convicted of more serious charges such as death resulting from abuse of a subordinate, which is punishable by life imprisonment.
