Taiwan pair jailed over fraud

A CHINESE mainland spokesperson confirmed yesterday that two Taiwan residents have been convicted of telephone fraud by a court in east China's Anhui Province.

The provincial court delivered the judgment last Friday, at the second trial of the case, said Fan Liqing, spokesperson with the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office.

The two were sentenced to prison terms by the court, Fan said, without revealing the details of their sentences.

In the case, three people - two from Taiwan and one from Chinese mainland - were convicted of planning and conducting phone fraud targeting Taiwan residents, Fan said.

They were found to have made more than 2.2 million yuan (US$346,456) through their scams, of which 1.22 million yuan has been confiscated, she said.

The Chinese mainland resident was also handed a prison sentence, she added.

Chinese mainland will return the confiscated money to the victims as identified by Taiwan authorities, in accordance with relevant regulations in the judicial cooperation, she said.

Fan also said a case concerning three Taiwan youths charged with robbery in the city of Kunshan in east China's Jiangsu Province has been taken to court.
