Taiwan reports its 1st case of human bird flu infection

TAIWAN health authorities yesterday confirmed the island's first human infection of H7N9 avian flu.

The 53-year-old Taiwan patient showed symptoms three days after returning from Suzhou in east China's Jiangsu Province, the island's disease control authority said.

He returned to Taiwan on April 9 after having been in Suzhou since March 28. He had a fever on April 12 and went to see a doctor on April 16 because of his high temperature.

The hospital did not confirm his infection until yesterday morning though he had a lung infection and suffered respiratory failure, the authority said. It said the hospital had tested him twice previously but the results had been negative.

The patient said he did not have any contact with birds or eat undercooked poultry or eggs during his stay in Suzhou, the statement said.

The patient, who is hepatitis-B-positive and suffers from high blood pressure, is in a serious condition, the authority said.
