Taiwan returns dismembered arm in murder case in Fujian Province

TAIWAN judicial authorities yesterday returned a dismembered arm involved in a murder case on the Chinese mainland after it washed up on the island, Chinanews.com reported, citing Taiwan-based Central News Agency today.

A man surnamed Lu allegedly strangled his girlfriend to death with a leather belt after quarreling with her on April 6, 2013, in Xiamen City, Fujian Province. He then allegedly hacked her up into eight pieces and dumped them in various places including Wuyuanwan and the city’s ferry terminal.

About one month later, the victim’s right arm was found in coastal Kinning Township in Kinmen County, Taiwan. The mainland’s public security ministry asked Taiwan authorities to assist in conducting inquiries in June 2013.

Taiwan authorities confirmed DNA samples from the arm and the other body parts found in Xiamen were a match, People’s Daily reported on its website. Police arrested Lu in September and he was charged with murder in April, the report said.

The Supreme People's Procuratorate asked Taiwan authorities to hand over the dismembered arm since it is evidence in the case against Lu, according to the report.

It is the first case involving the handing over of human remains in a murder case between the two sides, the report said.
