Taiwan to take down navy barricade
TAIWAN plans to remove underwater naval barricades from a former military outpost to let people take part in a swim from Chinese mainland, an official said on Monday.
Officials on the outlying islets of Quemoy, also known as Kinmen, want to remove the barricades before August 1, when about 100 people will try swimming there from the mainland, 6 kilometers away, information official Fu Yang-tu said.
"Ties between the two sides are growing warmer," Fu said. The swim, he said, "will at least bring a spirit of peace and perhaps also tourism."
The barricades to be removed are spikes mounted on cement bases.
