Taiwan young man claims golden award of short film competition

CHIU I-Jen, a Taiwan young man, won the golden award and 30,000 yuan (US$4,424) on Friday at a short film competition among youth across the Taiwan Strait.

As the competition was in theme of "We Love," Chiu's film was about a scavenger boy.

"I want to show audience that there are also people at the bottom of our society and they deserve our attention," he said.

The competition was launched in February to promote ties between young people across the Strait and to cultivate talented youngsters in film production and cultural innovation.

It received 1,203 short films in total, telling original stories in Chinese mainland Taiwan and showcasing their different backgrounds and views of life.

Fifty-nine of them entered the final round and 12 movies won awards in the competition, including Chiu's.
Some of the films were screened during the Shanghai International Film Festival and the winning films will be shown in cinemas in Taiwan, as well as universities across the Strait.

The 59 finalists also attended a camp in the past week to communicate with professional film producers, directors and scholars face to face.

They also visited local landmark buildings, such as the Shanghai Tower and Film Museum to have onsite training of film shooting and produced videos with the theme of “loving Shanghai.”

Chiu said it was his first time in Shanghai and he enjoyed the camp to communicate with film makers in different age groups and to learn the film making industry in the Chinese mainland.

Zhang Zhijun, director of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, praised the films and the competition and hoped more such events can be held in the future.
