Taiwan's Chen to serve more time
TAIWAN'S ex-leader Chen Shui-bian will serve more time for corruption, the island's high court ruled yesterday.
Chen's latter years in office were dogged by allegations of corruption and embezzlement and his wife was charged in 2006. Chen himself was not charged until his democratic progressive party lost the 2008 election and he stepped down, losing his immunity from prosecution.
Chen is already serving 17 years and six months for embezzlement of government funds, bribery, perjury and money laundering while in office. His wife was also jailed but remains in a prison hospital due to poor health.
In a ruling yesterday, Chen was given an extra two years on money-laundering charges and an extra 10 months for using fraudulent receipts to obtain money from a government fund.
