Taiwan's ex-leader given prison leave

Former leader of Taiwan Chen Shui-bian, who is currently serving a prison sentence for graft, was granted a temporary leave from prison to receive medical treatment today.

Escorted by his relatives, Chen arrived at the Taoyuan General Hospital around 7am and is scheduled to receive a medical checkup and colonoscopy.

Chen's relatives came to Taipei Prison, where Chen is jailed, to ask for him to be temporarily released to receive treatment. Chen was permitted to leave after authorities consulted with physicians.

Chen and his wife Wu Shu-chen were each sentenced to 17.5 years in prison for corruption and money laundering during Chen's tenure as the leader of Taiwan from 2000 to 2008. Chen began serving his sentence in December 2010.

Confined to a wheelchair and in poor health, Wu was also fined 154 million New Taiwan dollars (US$5 million), but her prison term was temporarily suspended by local prosecutors, as a prison hospital said she was physically unable to serve her jail term and refused to admit her.
