Taking aim at online crimes

AUTHORITIES in central Hubei Province have smashed a case involving fake drug sales via the Internet as China steps up efforts to crack down on online crimes.

A suspect surnamed Xiong was alleged to have earned more than 1.35 million yuan (US$200,000) by selling fake drugs he made online to more than 3,000 buyers across the country, according to a statement on Sunday by the food and drug administration in Wuhan, the provincial capital.

The case has been referred to the public security bureau, according to the statement.

Sales of fake drugs online were rampant in recent years and it was difficult to apprehend the offenders as they were able to cover their tracks well on the Internet, according to Wang Dongdong, deputy head of the administration.

On Friday, Wang Chen, head of the Information Office of the State Council, said the country would intensify a crackdown on online crimes and people using the Internet to spread pornography, fraud and gamble would face stiff punishment
