Talk to state leaders via online message board

CHINA has set up an online message board to enable grassroots to contact their favorite state leaders.

The "free access to Zhongnanhai," where China's central leadership is located, is now available on the Web portal of the People's Daily. Everyone can click to enter the homepage of News for the Communist Party of China (cpc.people.com.cn), a sub portal of the Website.

Since it opened five days ago, the online board has attracted about 100,000 messages. About 16,000 of them were addressed to President Hu Jintao while another 11,000 were calling for Premier Wen Jiabao's attention.

Topics most concerned in the messages were about soaring prices of food and housing, the one-child policy, preferential policies for farmers and rural areas, and anti-corruption measures.

"This is an important form of political democracy," said Yang Guangbin, who headed the political science department of Renmin University of China.

"Both the Party and government have increased their interaction with people at grassroots level while the Internet smoothes the way," Yang added.
