Talks To Upgrade Deal With Chile
CHINA and Chile have agreed to start negotiations on upgrading their free trade agreement.
The announcement was made on Tuesday during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to the Latin American nation.
According to a joint statement issued after Xi’s meeting with Chilean counterpart Michelle Bachelet, the two heads of state spoke highly of the results achieved over the 10 years since their bilateral agreement went into effect.
The two countries signed the agreement in 2005 and bilateral trade volume has grown fourfold since it took effect in 2006.
China is Chile’s largest trading partner, its largest export destination and the largest buyer of its copper products. Chile is also China’s second largest source of wine imports.
China is an important market for Chilean fruit and seafood and Chinese-made cars take up a considerable share of the Chilean auto market.
