Tank owned by private collector draws eyeballs
A Zhejiang Province business owner spent almost 300,000 yuan (US$49,000) on a decommissioned amphibious tank and planned to drive it in a cross-country race after repairing it, according to a news website.
Photos of the tank were posted by someone on WeChat, a popular communication app for smartphones, and many netizens called the tank collector “tuhao,” a buzzword for nouveaux riche.
The olive-green tank parked among weeds near the Taizhou-Jinhua Highway has attracted many onlookers. Some of them climbed on the armored vehicle to pose for pictures.
A man who is a friend of the tank owner, surnamed Chen, said Chen, a native of Xianju County, had spent thousands of yuan to restore the tank’s mobility. Fuel cost for one hour’s driving is as high as 500 yuan.
A SUV driver called the police after spotting the tank when he and other SUV drivers gathered to drill for a cross-country rally.
The tank was pulled away yesterday and was probably shipped to the home of its owner who works in another place, according to the report.
