Taobao vendor uses grandma to win back online shop
AN online seller from eastern Jiangsu Province left his 90-year-old grandma unattended in the reception lobby of taobao.com head office in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province to protest the closure of his online shop.
Taobao, which runs China's largest e-commerce website, reported to police on Monday that a white-haired old woman was left alone in its lobby, the local Qianjiang Evening News reported today.
A Taobao worker told police that the old woman came with her grandson in the morning but her grandson soon disappeared. Taobao receptionists had to take care of the elderly visitor.
Police learned that her grandson surnamed Ye used to run a cosmetics shop on taobao.com, but his shop was shut down in July for selling counterfeits.
After Taobao rejected his request to reopen the online shop, Ye used his grandma as a weapon against Taobao. He told the police that he would not pick up his grandma unless his request was met.
At about 7pm, Ye's father came and took the old woman home. But the next morning Ye brought his grandma to the Taobao office again.
Initially the old lady thought she was in Hangzhou for sightseeing, but later she realized she was being used as a bargaining chip and wanted to go home.
Police found Ye's hotel with the guide of his grandma. Ye's father told the newspaper that their whole family lived on the income of his son's online shop and they could not make a living after the shop was closed.
Ye said he had thought of opening a new online shop but that means all the credits he earned before would be lost and his business would suffer as a result.
Ye and his father promised to bring the old lady home. But Taobao did not compromise, saying the company has zero tolerance for cheating.
