Taxation not aims at small online vendors

Public health authorities in neighboring Jiangsu Province are investigating a popular health writer who advocates curing disease by eating raw loach for illegal medical practice, the Beijing News reported.

Ma Yueling, who was honored as the "Godmother of Health Preserving," was suspected of treating patients and giving prescriptions without a doctor's license, officials with the Nanjing Public Health Inspection Institute told the newspaper.

Ma, a 48-year-old Nanjing native who used to be a nurse, shot to fame among patients after she published her bestselling book "The Wisdom of Staying Healthy" in 2007, claiming that she has more than 100 "miracles" for curing breast cancer patients.

On her personal website, Ma touted that she also successfully treated 12 amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients by suggesting they eat raw loach to treat the neurological disorder.

But the miracle-like cases that pushed her into the media spotlight were later treated with nationwide skepticism regarding the exotic method's scientific evidence as well as Ma's own qualifications.
