Teacher arrested in nationwide cannabis crackdowns
A TEACHER from Shouguang in east China’s Shandong Province has been arrested in connection with an investigation into a nationwide drug-trafficking network said to involve 37 schools, the Qianjiang Evening News reported yesterday.
Police told the newspaper that the 32-year-old middle school math teacher, surnamed Sun, is suspected of importing marijuana from Canada and also buying from domestic growers.
They told the newspaper he had studied agriculture at university and was growing cannabis plants on his roof in preparation for large-scale cultivation.
They claimed he found sellers on the Internet and said that by tracking the distribution network found schools in 16 provinces and cities involved, the newspaper reported.
Listening in to online chats led to crackdowns and the detention of 23 suspects, the seizure of more than 200 kilograms of marijuana and 6,000 cannabis plants, and the destruction of 1.3 hectares of cannabis plantations, it reported.
Sun is alleged to have more than 10 people selling drugs for him, the most successful being a 16-year-old girl from northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province.
Between January and June, Sun is alleged to have traded more than 800,000 yuan (US$123,360) worth of drugs.
