Teacher beats student over name slight
A 14-year-old student in Jiangsu Province was twice beaten by a teacher and then slapped one by one by his peers simply because he called the teacher by her name, Modern Express reported.
The family of Zhang Xiaoxin, a student of Class 15 in Zhengliangmei Middle School in Lianshui County, has reported to the police and the teacher, surnamed Fan, who teaches Class 22, has been suspended, the report said.
Zhang didn't address the instructor as "teacher Fan" as is customary in Chinese schools. Apparently, Fan believed Zhang was being disrespectful, according to the report.
The school said it was still investigating the incident and that no final solution had been reached.
Zhang doesn't want to go back to school now as it never occurred to him that he would get beaten so seriously for yelling out Fan's name during a class break on December 17.
Zhang's parents told the newspaper that Fan, a 32-year-old English teacher, beat their son three times - the first time out of his classroom and the second time in Fan's office.
Afterwards, Fan also ordered all of her 65 students to slap Zhang on the face one by one.
Some of Fan's students told the newspaper that she threatened to hit them if they refused to slap Zhang.
Sun Bing, Fan's supervisor, told the newspaper that the school forbids teachers from physically punishing students.
"We have school regulations that forbid teachers from physically punishing students," Sun was quoted as saying. "Fan already admitted that she took some drastic action, but we still need to investigate whether it happened the way Zhang and his family have described."
