Teacher gets 18 years' jail for raping nine girls
A PRIMARY school teacher in east China's Anhui Province was yesterday sentenced to 18 years' prison for sexually assaulting nine girls under the age of 14, according to a local court ruling.
Yang Qifa, 59, a teacher from Qianshan County, molested seven schoolgirls in his office, classroom and the girls' homes more than a dozen times between 2001 and 2012. He also raped a third-grader several times and a second-grader once, the Qianshan People's Court heard.
Yang said he would appeal against the court ruling, Xinhua news agency reported.
His crimes surfaced last August when one student was asked during a children's game to confess her secrets. "I have a secret. Teacher Yang insulted me once. He hugged me and took off my pants in his office," she said.
Her younger sister said she had the same experience and gave the names of other victims to a woman who proposed the game. The woman called police and took six of the nine girls for a medical check-up, Jianghuai Morning Post reported.
Their parents knew nothing about their experiences until Yang was led away for police investigation. Some girls had told their parents about Yang's behavior, but the adults didn't believe it. Some girls were too ashamed to speak out, the paper said.
In another case, Li Xingong, a former deputy Party chief of Yongcheng City in the central Hunan Province, was executed on June 18 for raping 11 girls starting in 2011.
