Teacher mistaken for gang member

A senior government official in Shehong County in southwest China was sacked yesterday following an incident in which seven policemen beat up a teacher they mistook for a fugitive.

County authorities announced the removal of Liu He, who was also head of the public security bureau in the Sichuan Province county, three days after the officers were sacked, Newssc.org, a local news website reported.

The teacher, Yu Hui, is in a stable condition in hospital. He suffered bruising to his face and body and internal bleeding after the beating on May 3.

Authorities said the police were searching for a suspect involved in a gang fight.

When a plain-clothes officer asked to talk to Yu, the teacher at first ignored him and then tried to run off. The officer and his colleagues caught him, pinning him to the ground.

Students and staff at Shehong County Middle School took to the streets demanding an explanation after the assault.

The public security bureau later apologized, saying it was a case of mistaken identity.
