Teacher sex abuse arrest
A MUSIC teacher in Beijing has been arrested for allegedly sexually abusing at least six primary school students, whose families were each offered 90,000 yuan (US$13,653) by the school to keep quiet.
The suspect, surnamed Li, worked for two years as the music teacher for 400 students in a primary school in a mountain village in northern Beijing, reported The Beijing News yesterday.
Victims' families said since last December Li had ordered the class to stand in line against the wall at the beginning of almost every music lesson as an unexplained "special punishment."
While the class was facing away, Li would allegedly call over one or two girl students, cover their eyes with towels and molest them, said a grade four student.
Six girls aged around 10 said they were abused in this way. Li claimed he was "checking whether they were suitable for dancing," the newspaper reported.
One girl finally told here parents what was going on, but the school authorities offered to pay each family 90,000 yuan in compensation not to involve police. Five out of the six families accepted this, but officers received tip-off from a villager.
Li could face at least five years in prison if convicted of child abuse.
