Teacher sidelined after face slaps

A TEACHER in a northern China city has been suspended from duty for allegedly forcing students at her class to slap themselves.
Six students from the class of the Central Primary School of Nanying school district in Gocheng City, Hebei Province, told Hebei Youth Daily that all 37 pupils were forced to slap their faces 10 times while some were also ordered to stand in a corner.
The teacher, about 30, found muddy foot prints on the podium when she stepped into the classroom on Friday.
She lost her temper immediately and questioned students but nobody owned up.
The teacher, whose name has not been released, began at the class this semester and taught Chinese literature.
A girl said she was strongly slapped over the face several times by the teacher because she was deemed to be not slapping herself hard enough.
The other five said they slapped with large sound initially and then much lighter. The teacher did not discover their ploy.
The teacher ordered some students to clean the podium with their hands and checked each student's shoe soles.
Two students with wet soles were asked to stand in a corner. Another student, who tried to defend them, was ordered to join them.
The three were later taken by the teacher to her office and the others stayed in the classroom and dared not leave their seats at the interval. They were ordered to have an additional class at the noon break.
The girl beaten by the teacher told her mother it was not the first time. The teacher had ordered some of them to slap themselves when they made mistakes.
Students' parents visited the school on Monday.
Zhang Lei, vice headmaster, admitted the existence of physical punishment during the class but denied the "slap" accusation.
Zhang promised an apology by the teacher to the whole class and said further punishment was due from the school authority.
A parent told the newspaper he was not satisfied and was waiting on local education authority to take harsher action to avoid a recurrence.
Ma Hui, from the press office of Gocheng education bureau, said it would investigate and penalize the teacher if the claims were accurate.
