Teacher suspended after boy beaten in class
A young teacher in Guangdong Province was suspended after a boy in grade one was hit about 50 times with a wooden stick by his classmate under her orders, Guangzhou Daily reported today.
On March 4, the six-year-old boy, identified as Xiao Yong, a student at a private elementary school in Fuoshan City, was punished because he forgot to complete his homework, according to the newspaper.
The teacher ordered the class vice monitor to hit his buttocks with a wooden stick about 50 times in front of the class, the report said.
The newspaper published a picture showing the boy's buttocks covered with bruises and cuts.
The teacher told the newspaper she gave the order on impulse because many students in the class were not behaving well.
Xiao's mother, surnamed Cheng, told the newspaper her son cried heavily after the beating.
"The teacher didn't even check whether my child got injured," she was quoted as saying.
The school principal said the teacher lacked experience as she had just graduated from university last year.
"She has a teaching certification, but she doesn't know how to treat naughty children," he told the newspaper.
School leaders had already apologized to Xiao's parents and suspended the teacher. The school and Xiao's parents had reached an initial agreement on compensation, the report said.
The newspaper said the boy has refused to return to school because he is afraid.
