Teachers cane students for rent

STUDENTS at a county school in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality are complaining that they are being forced to board with teachers who are overcharging and offering miserable living conditions.

One teacher has crowded 40 students into 20 beds in his 180-square-meter home. Each student pays 350 yuan.

Students from the Dazu County No. 1 High School complained to today's Chongqing Evening News that they were forced into boarding at their teachers' homes and paying more than they would for the school dorms.

Twenty-three staff, including the school's principal, officials and teachers, are operating private dorms, the newspaper said.

The school dorms charge 350 yuan (US$51.22) per head for each semester.

Teacher Chen Liang is accommodating five students in two bedrooms of his 140-square-meter three-bed apartment. Three students share a large double bed and the other two share a single bed. Each pays 800 yuan.

At teacher Peng Feng's 180-square-meter home, 40 students are crowded in 20 beds. Each pays 350 yuan.

The school's principal, a man surnamed Wu, has divided his own bedroom into two and shares it with students.

As well as the rent, the teacher landlords charge for extras, the students said.

Teacher Song Xiaodong, for example, charges the students an extra 0.5 yuan for a bottle of water and 3 yuan for air-conditioning a night as well as the 500 yuan for rent. The teacher had planned to accommodate four students but finally accommodated 10.

Every morning the 40 students at teacher Peng Feng's home have to race to use the two toilets and many have to go to the school to use the toilets there.

The school's vice principal Tang Naiqi said he was unaware of poor living conditions and management at the teacher dorms.

He said the school had initiated the private dorms program because of the school's limited accommodation.

The school will see its students mushroom from 500-plus to nearly 4,000 next semester as Chongqing's education authority expands high school education.

The school can only accommodate 3,500 students, he said.

The school may cancel the private dorm program if the teachers do not follow the school's requirements for safety and management, Tang said. Rents at teacher dorms should be on a par with the school dorm's 350 yuan, he added.
