Teachers detained for molesting students
A 42-YEAR-OLD teacher in the southern city of Shenzhen and a math teacher in Jiahe County in Hunan Province have been detained on suspicion of molesting school girls, authorities in the two jurisdictions announced yesterday.
A male teacher, identified only by the surname Wu, who taught at the Hongji School in Shenzhen, is being held in connection with the sexual molestation of at least four second-grade girls.
The second male teacher, identified as Zeng Xingming, who teaches at the Puman Central Primary School in Jiahe, is being held in connection with the molestation of 12 second-graders. Zeng, according to a local official surnamed Yin, has admitted molesting five girls.
The cases are the latest in a string of child molestation cases across China that have distressed the public. A primary school headmaster and a government employee in Wanning City, Hainan Province, were detained by police on May 14 for sexually assaulting six female students.
In the latest incident, Southern Metropolis Daily in Shenzhen reported that four school girls have come forth to accuse Wu of unspecified "disgraceful acts." More victims are very likely to appear as a police investigation continues, the paper said.
The alleged sexual offenses were said to have occurred during lunch breaks and after school, beginning last August, police said.
Three of the girls have undergone medical examinations, but the results weren't made public. Some classmates said they witnessed Wu molesting at least one girl, Guangzhou Daily said.
According to the school headmaster, identified only as Li, the school comprises nine grades with nearly 2,700 students. Most are the children of migrant workers.
In Hunan Province, 12 girls, all second graders at Puman School, told police that their math teacher Zeng sexually assaulted them, according to a local public information official. Zeng has confessed to molesting five girls, and the investigation is continuing, the official said.
The school's headmaster, Lei Guangmin, has been suspended, Xinhua news agency reported.
The assaults came to light after the father of one of the girls called the headmaster on May 21 to accuse Zeng of committing indecent acts with his daughter.
The school suspended Zeng and issued a public apology to the victims and their families. Counseling services were provided to the victims.
