Teachers detained over fatal school stampede

THE head teacher and two other members of staff at a school in southwest China’s Yunnan Province have been detained over a stampede on Friday that left six students dead and 26 injured.

Li Lan, head teacher of Mingtong Primary School in provincial capital Kunming, vice head teacher Yang Lin — who was in charge of school safety, and physical education teacher Li Pengcheng were detained yesterday over the accident, the Kunming government said.

They have been held liable for the fatal accident caused by educational facilities, said a report on China Central Television.

The stampede occurred at around 2pm, after a nap period, when students were going downstairs.

Pupils were playing with a large section of cotton padding used in the gym which fell and blocked the way. Panic set in and students were killed and injured in the crush.

Of the injured, 18 students have been discharged from hospital, while eight remained under observation yesterday afternoon.

Two students who were in a serious condition are recovering and have been transferred from intensive care to a general ward, reported Xinhua news agency.

Classes have been suspended until the end of the National Day holiday on October 7.

Seven officials were suspended or removed from their posts on Saturday. They included Li Lan, together with four government officials, including Wang Jian, a deputy director of Kunming’s education bureau, and Li Qian, the district education administration, according to Yunnan Daily.

Vice head teacher Yang Lin and Li Zhang, deputy director of the district education bureau in charge of school security, were removed from their posts, said the newspaper.

The families of the children who died will each receive at least 800,000 yuan (US$130,400) compensation, according to Xinhua.
