Teachers held over child beatings

TWO kindergarten teachers who told a four-year-old girl to kick and slap a boy in class have been detained for 15 days and fined 1,000 yuan (US$146) by police in southeast China.

One teacher surnamed Lan, 23, filmed the attack on her mobile phone and later showed it to the boy's family in Shantou City, Guangdong Province, reported today's Guangzhou Daily.

During the one-minute clip, which was later uploaded to the Internet by a kindergarten employee, Lan and her colleague Li, 27, are laughing during the attack on the boy, who was punished for failing to sleep during the noon break on May 6.

Police found several other parents in Lan's class at the private Tongzhimeng Longxi kindergarten had reported bruises and wounds on their children.

The kindergarten was ordered to close temporarily for investigation by the education department.

Kindergarten president Weng Peijuan said she would offer psychological help to the children until they graduate.

The kindergarten was founded six years ago and had 210 pupils.
