Teachers punished after boys stab girl

TWO middle school officials and a tutor have been punished after a girl was tortured by eight classmates who stabbed her with compass needles and ballpoint pens in northeast China's Jilin Province.

The girl has left hospital after treatment and her parents are transferring her to another school, today's Jilin-based New Culture newspaper reported.

Her parents called police after finding hundreds of wounds across her body on June 1, when she claimed boy classmates beat her up at Changbai No.8 Middle School.

Police investigation confirmed eight students beat the girl. Two boys said she had broken their books and demanded 50 yuan (US$7.36) in compensation from her, which she refused to pay, the report said.

They organized the bullying in an empty classroom and sold tickets to more than 30 students to see the torture.

They said the boys covered a cloth over the girl's head and beat her, stabbing her with pens and compasses, according to the newspaper.

Party officials at Baishan Education Bureau warned the school's principal Zou Jichun and political education director as well as the students' tutor Jiang Haoliang, who was sacked.

Since all the boys are under age, they are spared from criminal punishment, according to police. But they shall pay compensation if the victim demands it, they said.

The girl's family asked for 100,000-yuan compensation but the boys' parents rejected the amount.
