Teachers punished for girl student's death in drinking party

Teachers and officials of a privately-owned vocational school in Qingdao, a port city in Shandong Province were sacked or suspended for the death of a girl student.

Six male teachers in Qingdao Qiushi Vocational School invited the 19-year-old victim, Liu Xiao'ao, and four other students to a drinking party on October 27 and the nine people consumed 48 bottles of beer.

Liu was very drunk and accidentally fell from a bathroom window on the fourth floor of the restaurant, Qingdao police said.

The police ruled out homicide as some people suspected in microblogs on Weibo.com.

The school said the six teachers had been dismissed or suspended from their jobs. But their identities were not revealed, Shandong-based news website, www.dzwww.com, reported.

The province's education bureau also punished the school's headmaster Lin Xibao and officials Xu Jianzhong and Liu Changyu.

Local authorities have given the family 600,000 yuan (US$96,300) in compensation, 360,000 yuan from the school and 240,000 yuan from the restaurant.

Though Liu's father still doubted the motive of the six male teachers who drank so many bottles of beer with the students, the school insisted that it was a just accident and there was nothing dirty involved.
