Teachers sacked over school beatings

A PRIMARY school principal has been sacked in northwest China and the school's English teacher suspended after he beat 13 pupils with an iron bar.

Teacher Liu Xiaoming asked his grade-three pupils to take off their pants and started beating their buttocks at Erfuzhuang Primary School in Lianhu County, Xi'an City, reported Sanqin Daily today.

The pupils begged him on their knees to stop, and a father later noticed his son's bruises and sent him to hospital. Doctors said the nine-year-old might need an operation.

The boy had been slapped and kicked by Liu earlier this month, and the teacher had promised not to physically punish him again, the report said.

One of Liu's girl pupils pointed out a line of sticks made of iron, wood or plastic in the corner of the classroom and said students would be punished according to the mistakes they made.

Education authorities suspended Liu temporarily and sacked principal Huang Changan for negligence of duty.

Liu told reporters he felt sorry and would never beat students again.
