Technicians to rebuild homes
THREE Chinese mainland technicians left for Taiwan yesterday afternoon to help install prefabricated houses on the typoon-ravaged island.
They were the first group of technicians sent to the island as requested by the Taiwan-based Straits Exchange Foundation and will be followed by seven others.
The Shenzhen City government donated 1,000 prefabricated houses worth nearly 20 million yuan (US$2.9 million) and the first 100 arrived in Kaohsiung in 14 containers on Tuesday.
They were soon transported to the area destroyed by Morakot in Pingtung County, one of the worst-hit areas in the island's southern region.
The technicians were sent by Shenzhen Yahgee Modular House Co Ltd, producer of the prefabricated homes.
Morakot, the worst typhoon to hit Taiwan in nearly 50 years, wreaked havoc across central and southern Taiwan, claiming at least 153 lives on the island.
