Teen changes story of killing parents
A TEENAGER accused of killing her parents and dismembering their bodies withdrew her confession when her trial began yesterday, saying her parents took an overdose of sleeping pills in a suicide bid before she killed them to save their agony.
Nineteen-year old Qi Pingping from a migrant workers' family in Zhongshan City, Guangdong Province, was found in a rented apartment last September after she spent four days with 42 bags of her parents' chopped-up corpses. She allegedly told police before that she killed them to stop their quarreling.
But Qi yesterday told the court in Zhongshan that her parents were not quarreling on September 11 when she killed them. They took an overdose of sleeping pills to commit suicide, she said.
Qi said her father had been suicidal for two years after he became sick in 2008, and her mother had depression and told Qi many times that she must die if her husband did.
Qi said she could not bear her parents' convulsions and painful groans after they took the pills, and decided to kill them to relieve their pain.
Her lawyer said Qi's confession explained how a teenager could kill two adults without any neighbor hearing fights or screams.
But prosecutors said Qi's confession in court was not believable because an autopsy found no sleeping pills in her parents' stomachs. The court did not pass a verdict yesterday.
Qi appeared calm during the afternoon hearing. But police found pictures of self-mutilation in her digital camera. It was reported that her favorite Internet icon was a drug-addicted woman famous for putting her self-harm pictures online.
When asked why she lied to police during investigation. Qi said she didn't want to live after her parents died and made up the story that she murdered her parents in cold blood, wishing for a quick death sentence. But after almost a year in custody, she changed her mind.
Qi also confessed that after her parents died, she searched the Internet for how to dispose of the corpses. Following online instructions, she bought hammers and cleavers to chop up their bodies, stuffed them into garbage bags, and even tried to boil some of the body parts to get rid of the smell.
It was reported that Qi was adopted when she was only three days old, and finding out the truth made her snap. But Qi said she only found she was adopted during yesterday's court hearing.
Qi's relatives arrived from central China's Henan Province for the hearing. Her uncle pleaded for judges to save her from the death penalty.
