Teen faces identity dilemma
A 79-YEAR-OLD nanny who is now blind is trying to get a household registration for the teen girl she has raised almost from birth in Wuhan, capital city of Hubei Province.
Huang Guiying and the girl, Yuan Jie, 17, live in a 20-square-meter apartment, and the nanny considers the teen as a daughter, Changjiang Business Daily reported.
Huang has failed in her attempts to get Yuan a legal identity because the teen's parents were not married when she was born and she wasn't registered right away. Without a legal identity, Yuan, who now works in a supermarket, can not take the national college entrance exams.
Huang told the newspaper she still remembers the day when Yuan became a part of her life 17 years ago.
She had recently retired and decided to take care of children to earn some money when a man named Yuan Yuliang asked her to take care of a two-month old girl. He paid Huang 300 yuan (US$45) per month and told her Yuan Jie had no mother when she was born, the report said.
The baby was in poor health and many neighbors recommended Huang send Yuan back, but the nanny refused. She told the newspaper if she sent her back, Yuan might not have survived.
Yuan told the newspaper Huang has always been there for her and she hasn't seen her father since she was 11 years old, the same time he stopped providing the 300 yuan a month.
To support them, Huang started collecting and selling rubbish several years ago. She was forced to stop working when she got cataracts and went blind.
