Teenager slashes schoolmate's throat

POLICE in southwest China's Sichuan Province are investigating why a 16-year-old allegedly stabbed the throat of a random schoolmate, killing him as he slept in the dormitory.

Mu Zhizhong at Beichuan Middle School in Mianyang City - one of the worst hit areas in the May 12 earthquake in 2008 - sneaked into a dorm opposite his own carrying two knives, police told today's Oriental Outlook magazine.

He allegedly used one knife to slash deep into the throat of a boy, named as Li Haolong. He did not know the victim, who died after being sent to Mianyang No. 404 Hospital, the magazine reported.

Later the attacker wrote in his diary: "I want to say sorry to my parents, my teacher and the boy. I don't even know who he is, why should have I killed him? I'm so sorry."

He then climbed over the school wall, flagged a taxi and surrendered himself to the nearest police station.

Students at the school told the newspaper that they felt a psychological change after the earthquake, when more than 1,300 of the old school's 2,900 students and teachers were killed in the rubble.
