Temple saved from forest fire
A FOREST fire that was racing toward a 500-year-old Buddhist temple was put out late on Saturday night in southwest China's Yunnan Province, local authorities said yesterday.
The fire started on the mountain behind Qiongzhu Temple, or Bamboo Temple, in the provincial capital of Kunming at noon on Saturday and quickly spread in the dry conditions.
It was extinguished at 11:20pm on Saturday but fire-fighters are still combing the area to root out potential fire hazards, according to a spokesman with the city's fire bureau.
The cause of the fire is being investigated.
Another forest fire in the city's Yiliang County on Friday afternoon quickly spread to within 20 kilometers of a tourist area in neighboring Shilin Yi Autonomous County which is famous for its karst landscape.
But firefighters stopped it reaching the scenic spot, putting it out at 9:30am yesterday.
Police have detained a local resident, Tao Jirong, after the fire he was using for cooking got out of control, the spokesman said.
Earlier this year, China's southwestern region was hit by a severe drought, the worst in decades. The drought was only slightly relieved in mid-April when spring rains started to fall.
