Temple suspends monastic program for capacity concern
A Buddhist temple in Zhejiang Province had to suspend a monastic life experience program when more than 500 people signed up, far exceeding its capacity for 200.
The Ci'en Temple in Tiantai County initially offered the program to 20 people who expressed a desire to become monks. The participants must follow the temple's schedule and rules and study Buddhist classics under senior monks.
The program is free of charge. Participants could bring along their phones and laptops but only limited use each day would be allowed.
The temple advertised the program on its website in May but it did not get much attention until someone posted it on the Weibo microblogging site a few days ago. The response was overwhelming.
The abbot named Zhidu issued a statement today, saying he didn't expect the program to have such an impact. Its popularity suggests that people today are craving for spiritual life.
