Tenants forced out at gunpoint as houses erased

Three houses in Beijing's Fengtai District were demolished against the will of their owner and five tenants who were driven out by force yesterday.

About 50 people came at 1:20am yesterday and pulled the owner surnamed Li and his five tenants out of the three houses. Li was allegedly threatened at gunpoint and was beaten up, the Beijing News reported today.

Fengtai police have started an investigation into the incident.

Li said his ex-wife surnamed Wu was behind the forced demolition because they had a property dispute. When they broke up in 2008, Li obtained the ownership of these houses he built himself. But as these houses stood in the way of a new real estate project, a man surnamed Chen came on Wu's half and ordered Li to leave, the report said.

"Chen was among the people who pulled down my houses," Li told the newspaper.

Wu admitted she had an ownership dispute with Li and asked Chen to mediate, but she insisted that she was unaware of the forced demolition.
