Kunming terror attack leaves 29 dead
A GROUP of knife-wielding men attacked a train station in southwestern China yesterday, leaving at least 29 people dead and more than 130 injured by 6am today, in what the Chinese authorities described as an organized terrorist attack.
The attack started at the Kunming Railway Station in Yunnan’s provincial capital of Kunming about 9pm.
The Yunnan News said that gunshots were heard after police arrived.
It said attackers hacked victims at random, including people at the ticket office and by self-service ticket machines.
Police shot dead a number of the attackers, it was reported.
Photographs posted online showed bodies and scattered luggage on the blood-stained station floor.
Two policemen were among those injured by cleavers as long as 1 meter that the attackers were carrying.
Officers cordoned off the first floor and evacuated railway passengers to the second floor of the station, one of the largest in southwest China.
Yunnan’s police department this morning denied rumors of violent incidents in other parts of the provincial city around the same time.
