Terror suspects face murder rap
AUTHORITIES yesterday laid out the charges against the four surviving suspects of a knife attack that left 29 people dead and more than 140 others injured early this month in Kunming, Yunnan Province.
The suspects were charged with murder, participating in a terrorist organization and other crimes, the People’s Daily reported yesterday, citing provincial prosecutors.
Police shot four other attackers dead on March 1 during the attack at Kunming’s railway station.
The suspects could be sentenced to death if they are convicted.
Yunnan Party Chief Qin Guangrong has said the eight attackers from Xinjiang “originally wanted to travel abroad to participate in a ‘jihad’ or ‘holy war’,” according to Xinhua news agency.
He said they tried but failed to leave China from both Yunnan and Guangdong provinces.
After that, they plotted to pull off the stabbing spree in either Yunnan’s Honghe County, near the Vietnam border, or the provincial capital of Kunming, said Qin.
