Terrorists busted, government says
CHINESE security forces have broken up a terrorist group and will give details later this week, the Ministry of Public Security said yesterday.
The ministry gave little information in its brief announcement, which was posted on its Website. It said only that police had "cracked a case involving a major terrorist organization."
The ministry said details would be given at a news conference tomorrow.
The ministry also sent an e-mail to foreign journalists inviting them to the news conference in Beijing, the subject of which would be "circulating a notice about the Ministry of Public Security solving the case of a large terrorist organization."
A ministry spokeswoman declined to give further details.
China blames terrorist groups operating in the far western region of Xinjiang for attacks on police and other government targets. It says these groups espouse violent separatism and that some have links with Central Asian militants or al-Qaida.
While the Olympic Games were held in Beijing in 2008, separatists staged at least three attacks against police and paramilitary troops in Xinjiang's southern frontier city of Kashgar.
